HUMBOLDT TO RECEIVE $252,000 INVESTMENT THROUGH BUILDING COMMUNITIES PROGRAM

Released on August 15, 2007

Planned renovations to the Humboldt Uniplex took a major step forward today thanks to a $252,465 Building Communities Program investment from the province of Saskatchewan.

"Sport and recreation bring communities together and provide a wide range of shared activities for people of all ages," Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Sandra Morin said in Humboldt today. "This Building Communities Program investment will continue to improve the quality of life for people in and around the City of Humboldt."

The Humboldt Uniplex is a multipurpose recreation facility that features the Humboldt Aquatic centre, the Elgar Peterson Arena and the Jubilee Hall. Proposed renovations to the building include an energy efficiency upgrade, replacement of the arena roof and repairs to the exterior of the building. The Uniplex has served the recreational needs of people in and around the City of Humboldt since 1983.

"Just over 25 years ago a group of citizens in our community created a vision for a first class recreational and cultural facility in our community - the result was the building of the Humboldt Uniplex," City of Humboldt Mayor Malcolm Eaton said. "The city is very pleased to be undertaking this project, which will continue the legacy that those community members created. The renovations and improvements will allow us to maintain and develop our programs and services for Humboldt and area for another 25 years."

The Building Communities Program is providing $100 million for cultural and recreational infrastructure over three years, beginning in 2006-07. The program seeks to ensure the sustainability of cultural and recreational infrastructure in communities throughout the province. It is the largest per capita program of its kind in Canada.

Information on the Building Communities Program can be found on the Culture, Youth and Recreation website at www.cyr.gov.sk.ca.
