RM OF BRITANNIA RECEIVES $112,500 FROM BUILDING COMMUNITIES PROGRAM

Released on August 10, 2007

Sports enthusiasts in the RM of Britannia got some good news today in the form of a $112,575 investment from the province in a new sports arena for Hillmond.

"Sport and recreation facilities are critical in ensuring that rural communities throughout the province are able to thrive and grow," Health Minister Len Taylor said in Hillmond today on behalf of Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Sandra Morin. "The new sports arena will have an appreciable impact on the quality of life for people in and around the RM of Britannia."

The new Hillmond Central Sports Society Arena building will replace the 40 year old facility in the hamlet of Hillmond, which was condemned in 2006. Upon completion, the new multipurpose facility will feature an arena with additional seating and meeting rooms. The arena is expected to service the nearby Hillmond Central School and the hamlet of Greenstreet.

"The contribution from the Building Communities Program is a huge boost to the RM of Britannia and the Hillmond Arena," Hillmond Arena Fundraising Committee chair Randy Noble said. "The facility will meet the recreational needs of our growing community."

The Building Communities Program is providing $100 million for cultural and recreational infrastructure over three years, beginning in 2006-07. The program seeks to ensure the sustainability of cultural and recreational infrastructure in communities throughout the province. It is the largest per capita infrastructure program of its kind in Canada.

Information on the Building Communities Program can be found on the Culture, Youth and Recreation website at www.cyr.gov.sk.ca.
