LITERACY LEADER RECEIVES THE 2007 COUNCIL OF THE FEDERATION LITERACY AWARD

Released on August 10, 2007

Colleen Christopherson-Cote, a community literacy leader from Coronach, is the 2007 Council of the Federation Literacy Award recipient for Saskatchewan.

The 2007 Council of the Federation Literacy Award recognizes outstanding achievement and excellence in literacy and is presented annually by provincial Premiers to an individual in each province and territory in Canada. Christopherson-Cote is being recognized for her exemplary level of commitment to her community and for her desire to make a difference in the lives of literacy learners of all ages.

"Ms. Christopherson-Cote is being recognized for her outstanding contributions as a literacy champion," Premier Lorne Calvert said. "She is a great inspiration to others and has made significant contributions to the advancement of literacy. She is helping make Saskatchewan the best place to live, work and raise a family."

Christopherson-Cote is the founder and executive director of the Prairie Literacy Awareness Network, and is a member of the Palliser Regional Library's Executive Committee. She has also served as member and chair of the Coronach Branch Library Board.

"Ms. Christopherson-Cote is deeply committed to expanding access to literacy services in the community of Coronach," Minister responsible for Literacy Deb Higgins said. "She has been the driving force behind many innovative programs that have engaged many people in her community, from preschool children to seniors."

"Ms. Christopherson-Cote is a role model for everyone involved with literacy," Saskatchewan Literacy Commissioner Dr. Margaret Lipp said. "Premiers across Canada established this prestigious award in recognition of the importance of literacy as an essential building block to a vibrant society and economy."

The Saskatchewan Literacy Commission works closely with community partners to assist in coordinating resources dedicated to literacy in the province.

Christopherson-Cote is the third annual award recipient to be honoured with this award. The previous two Saskatchewan award recipients were Lynda Richards and Carey Rigby-Wilcox.

Premier Calvert will honour Christopherson-Cote with a medallion and certificate at a ceremony this fall.
