MAJOR RENOVATION FOR CUMBERLAND REGIONAL COLLEGE IN NIPAWIN

Released on August 9, 2007

Students at Cumberland Regional College in Nipawin will soon have a space to call their own, thanks to a $2.1 million capital investment by the Government of Saskatchewan.

The investment allows for the expansion and renovation of the college facilities currently housed in the L.P. Miller Comprehensive High School. Currently, the College operates in the high school, where they have two classrooms for Adult Basic Education and one office converted into a computer equipped distance delivery classroom. The expansion almost triples the College's space to 1,438 square metres (15,478 square feet).

"Saskatchewan's Regional Colleges have done tremendous work to deliver increasing numbers of training opportunities, despite, in some cases, having limited space to do so," Advanced Education and Employment Minister Warren McCall said. "Capital improvements like this one will allow the province's training system to increase its long-term capacity to respond to skilled labour shortages in numerous sectors, and to provide additional training opportunities to our young people so they can pursue their careers right here in Saskatchewan."

The renovated space will also house 11 classrooms/computer labs, eight program support areas, including tutorial rooms and study space, as well as 18 offices and 12 support staff workstations.

"The expansion of the Nipawin Campus is a significant step towards enabling Cumberland College to provide additional skills training required for the economic development of the northeast region," Cumberland College Nipawin CEO Valerie Mushinski said. "With today's increasing costs, access to post-secondary education close to home is paramount."

When renovations are completed, learners in carpentry, electrical, welding, machinery and motor mechanic programs will conduct their studies in the new facility.
