SCN today announced its participation in a pilot project that will deliver Canada's first nation-wide satellite-cellular communications service to First Nation communities. In a partnership between SCN, OmniGlobe Networks and Naskapi Imuun Inc., SCN's satellite network will connect local networks to global cellular and telephone systems for local, long distance and roaming services that are currently available only to urban residents.
"SCN uses satellite technology to connect people - entire communities - to the many opportunities made possible through cellular and wireless broadband internet services," Minister Responsible for SCN Sandra Morin said.
SCN partnered with OmniGlobe in 2006 to deliver satellite-based, wireless broadband internet service to rural and remote communities across Canada. Video-conferencing, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and other e-solutions are delivered to communities that otherwise would not have access to high speed connectivity.
"It's exciting to see the many ways SCN's sophisticated technology is helping people connect with each other: learning, doing business, sharing cultural stories and accessing a world of ideas," Morin said.
SCN's state-of-the-art technology connects business, learners and communities to opportunities for interactive televised instruction, professional development and broadband access to the World Wide Web. OmniGlobe Networks is a global telecommunications company that provides affordable cellular, wireless broadband internet and VoIP services over satellite to geographic regions around the world where terrestrial telecommunications are unavailable, unreliable or just too expensive. Naskapi Imuun is a for-profit corporation that is wholly owned by the Naskapi Nation of Kawawachikamach, a First Nation located northeast of Schefferville, QC.
