Francophones and Francophone organizations in the Saskatoon area will soon enjoy greater access to services, thanks to a $151,814 Building Communities Program contribution to the Fédération des francophones de Saskatoon. "The Fédération des francophones de Saskatoon represents nearly 20 francophone organizations in the city, from sports teams to performing arts groups to schools," Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Sandra Morin said. "The Building Communities Program is helping the Fédération fulfill its long-term goals of sustainability and service to the community. This is one more way in which we are making Saskatchewan a great place for people to live, work and build a future."
Morin was in Saskatoon today to announce funding for the Fédération des francophones de Saskatoon. The provincial investment will go towards the purchase of a permanent home in downtown Saskatoon for the offices of the Fédération. The permanent offices will serve as a gathering place for the city's francophone population and help ensure a wider range of French-language services for the people of Saskatoon and the Fédération member organizations.
"This grant allows the Fédération des francophones de Saskatoon to realize the vision of the Village Urbain Francophone developed many years ago," Fédération board president Laurette Lefol said. "This vision involves the set up of the infrastructure of a francophone village within the City of Saskatoon. Our village already has its school, its church, its theatre and housing facility. The community has been working hard to have a place to call their own and owned by them. We can now move forward in developing a centre where the community can gather for events and to receive services in French. Having our community centre close to downtown is an important step in continuing to build our visibility within Saskatoon. By attracting the francophone community to downtown we are able to contribute to the socio-economic development of Saskatoon."
The Building Communities Program is the largest per capita cultural and recreational infrastructure program in Canada. The Building Communities Program is providing $100 million for cultural and recreational infrastructure over three years, beginning in 2006-07. The program seeks to ensure the sustainability of cultural and recreational infrastructure in communities throughout the province.
