Learning Minister Deb Higgins today announced a three per cent increase in wages for individuals working in licensed child care centres, bringing the total wage increase to 21 per cent since April 2005.
“Early learning and child care workers play a critically important role in the lives of our children,” Higgins said. “This increase is the fourth increase since 2005 that our government has implemented to support employees in this sector. These wage increases will help us address the immediate need to retain and recruit quality staff to work in licensed child care centres across the province.”
In April 2005 wages were increased by three per cent. This was followed by a six per cent increase effective November 2005, and a nine per cent increase effective April 2006. In total the government has spent $11.7 million since 2005 to increase wages for child care employees.
“This increase will improve wages of the lowest paid front-line staff currently working in licensed child care centres,” Higgins said. “We recognize the importance of quality child care as a support to families who are working or improving their education. It is all part of our plan to make Saskatchewan the best place for families to live, work and build strong futures.”
