MINISTER PROCLAIMS SOIL CONSERVATION WEEK

Released on April 11, 2007

Agriculture and Food Minister Mark Wartman has proclaimed the week of April 15-21, as Soil Conservation Week in Saskatchewan.

The theme for 2007 is Soils and the Environment.

“Saskatchewan producers realized the importance of soil conservation many years ago, and are world leaders in the adoption of soil conservation practices,” Wartman said.  “I am very proud of Saskatchewan producers, for their stewardship of the soil, and their role in promoting soil conservation and protection of the environment.”

The Minister also noted that Saskatchewan is a leader in conservation tillage technology, developed by Saskatchewan farmers and exported all around the world, helping to improve sustainable agriculture worldwide.

Soil Conservation Week in Saskatchewan is observed in conjunction with National Soil Conservation Week, promoted across Canada by the Soil Conservation Council of Canada (SCCC).  This year marks the 22nd annual National Soil Conservation Week held in Canada.

SCCC’s Executive Director Doug McKell encourages all citizens, as well as agricultural producers, to be aware of and practice soil conservation.

“All Canadians should be conscious of the soil because it’s the source of our food,” McKell said.  “Soil is as valuable a resource as water, air and our biodiversity.”

One of the SCCC’s members, the Saskatchewan Soil Conservation Association (SSCA), is composed of Saskatchewan producers who have actively promoted the use of soil conservation techniques for the last 20 years.

“Soil conservation is the foundation of all sustainable agricultural production,” SSCA Executive Manager Blair McClinton said.  “Saskatchewan has the highest level of adoption of soil conservation practices in Canada, and Saskatchewan producers are among the highest users of soil conservation practices anywhere in the world.  Soil conservation practices maintain and enhance soil quality, and also improve water quality, air quality, and help to address climate change by storing carbon in the soil.”
