MOOSE JAW STEWARDSHIP GROUP RECEIVES $25,000 FOR SOURCE WATER PROTECTION PLAN

Released on September 22, 2006

The Saskatchewan Watershed Authority and the Moose Jaw River Watershed Stewards Inc. have signed a funding agreement to begin the implementation of the Moose Jaw River Watershed Source Water Protection Plan.

The Saskatchewan Watershed Authority will provide $25,000 to assist with the salary, office and travel expenses associated with hiring a local co-ordinator to oversee implementation of the Source Water Protection Plan for 22 rural municipalities, two towns, 10 villages and the City of Moose Jaw. The plan contains a number of key actions to address the urban, rural and industrial impacts on water quality and quantity in the Moose Jaw area; ecosystem health; and public education initiatives.

Learning Minister Deb Higgins on behalf of Minister responsible for the Saskatchewan Watershed Authority John Nilson, Moose Jaw River Watershed Stewards Inc. Chair Terry Anthony, and Saskatchewan Watershed Authority President Stuart Kramer participated in a signing ceremony at the Saskatchewan Watershed Authority Head Office in Moose Jaw today.

"This milestone, along with the hard work of the committee participants, will ensure the sound management and protection of source water for all residents of the Moose Jaw region," Higgins said.

"The health of our watershed is the responsibility of all residents, rural and urban," Anthony said. "In addition to technical and financial assistance from the provincial and federal governments, some local rural municipalities, the City of Moose Jaw, local conservation and development associations, and Ducks Unlimited Canada have also provided financial support and have all played a large part in the planning process."

The development of source water protection plans is a priority of the Saskatchewan Watershed Authority, which has a mandate to manage and protect the quality and quantity of the province's water supplies.
