LA LOCHE COMMUNITY SCHOOL REOPENS AFTER RENOVATIONS

Released on September 22, 2006

Residents and visitors gathered to celebrate the completion of an addition and renovations to La Loche Community School in La Loche today.

"Our investment in this project demonstrates our commitment to high-quality education for all of Saskatchewan's youth, in all parts of our province," Community Resources Minister and Athabasca MLA Buckley Belanger said on behalf of Learning Minister Deb Higgins. "These improvements will go a long way toward helping the youth in La Loche reach their potential and support cultural and community activities."

Saskatchewan Learning has contributed approximately $8.1 million for renovations and additions to the high school building. The total cost of $10.6 million was cost-shared with the Northern Lights School Division (NLSD).

A 2,400 square metre addition and the renovation of the existing space has allowed for the addition of new classrooms, a new administration area, expanded lab facilities and expanded performing arts area. There is also space in which to run several community school programs, including elders' rooms, nutrition programs and a spiritual centre.

"The community has waited a long time for this day and are very proud of their newly expanded facility," Northern Lights School Division Board Chair Tina Rasmussen said. "The board of education would wish to thank the former and present ministers for their support and commitment to the project."

Northlands Regional College has also regained their second classroom, which has been used by the high school for the past few years. Housing the high school and regional college in the same facility creates a closer connection to post-secondary education for students at the high school.

"The completion of the renovations and expansion of the La Loche Community School will significantly enhance the partnership between NLSD and Northlands College in La Loche," Northlands College CEO Bill McLaughlin said. "The additional space will facilitate expanded programming capability at the high school and post-secondary level."

The total commitment by Government to pre-kindergarten – Grade 12 capital projects across the province this fiscal year is $22 million.

"School capital projects are a priority for our government. We are committed to ensuring all Saskatchewan students have a safe, modern and well-equipped learning environment," Belanger said.
