LABOUR DAY MESSAGE

Released on September 1, 2006

Labour Minister David Forbes is pleased to acknowledge the contributions of Saskatchewan workers as we head into the Labour Day long weekend.

"Labour Day is an occasion for celebrating the great achievements of working people, past and present who have built our province and Canada as a nation. It is the day Canadians say 'thank you' to all the men and women who have played a part in building our strong, prosperous democracy.

"We live in a world of change but, whatever we do, we cannot prosper without our workers. Working women and men build, operate and maintain the systems we rely upon to produce and transport our goods to markets around the world and bring them to our door. Working people deliver the services on which our lives and the quality of our lives depend. We are indebted to them for building our homes and workplaces, educating our children, providing for our security and caring for our less advantaged members of society.

"In Saskatchewan, working people were instrumental in establishing the first comprehensive occupational health and safety system in Canada. Every province eventually followed Saskatchewan's example and people throughout our country have benefited from that achievement.

"Saskatchewan's labour force is hard working, diligent and productive. Working men and women here have developed the skills necessary to increase our productivity. This year total investment in Saskatchewan will set an all-time record.

"As Minister of Labour, and on behalf of the Government of Saskatchewan, I am pleased to salute our working people on this Labour Day and to extend them best wishes for future success."

Labour Day was first proclaimed a National Holiday in 1894.
