CALVERT PRESENTS 2006 COUNCIL OF THE FEDERATION LITERACY AWARD

Released on October 18, 2006

Premier Lorne Calvert presented Saskatoon literacy volunteer Carey Rigby-Wilcox with the 2006 Council of the Federation (COF) Literacy Award in Saskatoon today.

This award is presented annually to an individual in each province and territory involved in literacy in their community. This year, Saskatchewan's award recognizes the outstanding achievements of a literacy volunteer.

"Carey Rigby-Wilcox, who makes a tremendous contribution to the literacy community, is an inspiration for us all," Calvert said. "She is a literacy learner, activist and volunteer who is deeply committed to making a difference in the lives of non-readers by promoting and advancing literacy at the community, provincial and national levels."

Rigby-Wilcox is a former vice-president of READ Saskatoon's Board of Directors and is also a board member of the Saskatchewan Literacy Network and the Movement for Canadian Literacy. She speaks to various groups about the challenges faced by people with low literacy skills.

"Literacy strengthens our social fabric by equipping our citizens with the skills they need to build their future right here in Saskatchewan," Minister responsible for the Saskatchewan Literacy Commission Deb Higgins said.

The Saskatchewan Literacy Commission works closely with community partners to co-ordinate the human and financial resources dedicated to literacy in the province. This fiscal year, the Commission has provided close to $2 million in funding for literacy programs and services.

Today's presentation coincides with Education Week in Saskatchewan. Celebrated in 2006 during the week of October 15th-21st, Education Week provides an opportunity for the public to recognize the unique and diverse learning opportunities in Saskatchewan.
