SOD TURNING MARKS CONSTRUCTION OF NEW REGINA CORRECTIONAL FACILITY

Released on October 16, 2006

A sod turning led by Corrections and Public Safety Minister Warren McCall today marked beginning of construction at the Regina Provincial Correctional Centre.

The construction project will replace the wing of the Correctional Centre built in 1913. This section now houses a number of administrative and program areas, as well as approximately 216 sentenced and remand offenders.

"This project is an extension of the provincial government's commitment to the safety and security of its citizens," McCall said.

The new facility will have a total of 216 beds, distributed as follows:

• 144-bed remand unit;
• 48 high-security beds;
• 12 medium-security beds; and
• 12 medical beds.

It will also include a health care outpatient clinic, an inmate admission/discharge area with vehicle sally-port and a visiting area. An interim administration building will also be constructed.

"The design of the facility means better security, working conditions and safety for staff, inmates and visitors," McCall said. "The facility mirrors the corrections approach of balancing necessary supervision and controls with effective programs to help offenders regain their place in the community as productive citizens."

Cost of the construction project, expected for completion in summer 2008, is approximately $51.5 million. PCL Maxim is the construction contractor.

Saskatchewan Corrections and Public Safety is responsible for keeping Saskatchewan individuals and communities safe. It achieves this by working with governments and communities to enhance security and public safety through effective adult and youth corrections services, emergency planning, training, licensing and inspection services.
