DISCOUNTED BUS PASSES NOW AVAILABLE IN SASKATOON

Released on October 11, 2006

Low-income residents in Saskatoon can now purchase discounted bus passes thanks to a partnership between the Province and the City of Saskatoon.

Approximately 22,000 low-income residents are eligible to purchase monthly bus passes at a reduced cost of $15 effective immediately. Adult transit passes in Saskatoon normally cost $61. The City of Saskatoon agreed to a trial period of one year. The province is contributing a minimum of $275,000 based on the number of passes sold during the one-year period.

"This program makes transportation more affordable for low-income people in Saskatoon so they can go to work, look for jobs, take advantage of education and training opportunities and build an independent life," Community Resources Minister Buckley Belanger said. "Saskatoon is the fourth city in Saskatchewan to implement discounted bus passes, and interest here is high based on the fact nearly 200 passes were sold after just two days."

"We are very pleased that more residents can use our Transit system as well as our leisure facilities," Saskatoon Mayor Donald Atchison said. "The unique addition of a City LeisureCard with this program will provide the opportunity for more people and their families to enjoy our recreation facilities."

The discounted bus pass program is for eligible residents, including people enrolled in the Social Assistance Program or receiving the Transitional Employment Allowance, the Saskatchewan Employment Supplement or the Provincial Training Allowance. The City is also providing LeisureCards to those who purchase discounted bus passes, which are good for admission into the City's five leisure centres, outdoor pools, Cosmo Arena and the Terry Fox Track.

Registration forms are available from Community Resources at 220 Idylwyld Drive South or from one of many community-based organizations, including Equal Justice for All. Registrants take the completed form, along with identification (such as a Health Card) and proof of eligibility (such as a statement of benefit) to the Saskatoon Transit Customer Service Centre at 226-23rd Street East to purchase a discounted bus pass.
