AFFORDABLE HOUSING PROJECT IN SASKATOON TO HELP SENIORS

Construction of 51 new, affordable housing units for low to moderate-income seniors officially began today with a sod-turning ceremony in Saskatoon.

The rental units, which will be available to seniors and couples, are being constructed under the Centenary Affordable Housing Program (CAHP). Funding assistance is being provided by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation, the City of Saskatoon and K.C. Charities Inc. The project is being co-ordinated by K.C. Charities Inc., a non-profit charitable corporation established in Saskatoon in 1983.

"This project exemplifies what HomeFirst is all about, which is helping our seniors to remain independent by offering them the opportunity to live in safe, affordable housing," Saskatoon Eastview MLA Judy Junor said on behalf of Community Resources Minister Buckley Belanger. "Columbian Manor is an outstanding example of what we can accomplish when governments at all levels, along with communities, work together toward a common goal. We are pleased to work with our partners to make projects like this a reality, and to ensure no one is left behind."

"The Columbian Manor expansion reinforces the sense of community in Saskatoon, and when we all pull together to help each other, it shows we can do so much," Saskatoon Mayor Donald Atchison said. "More affordable housing for seniors is so important in keeping the fabric of Saskatoon strong, and the City of Saskatoon is very proud of its commitment to such a project."

The new housing units will be connected to the existing Columbian Manor, located at 2940 Louise Street in the Nutana area of Saskatoon. The facility offers wheelchair-accessible one-and two-bedroom suites and assisted living services, common areas and other amenities.

Total project costs are estimated to be $5,164,136 or $101,257 per unit. K.C. Charities Inc. was approved under CAHP for $2,550,000 (51 units at $50,000). The breakdown of CAHP contributions are as follows: Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation ($1,275,000), Saskatchewan Housing Corporation ($1,020,000) and City of Saskatoon ($255,000). The funding balance will be provided by K.C. Charities Inc. in the form of mortgage financing ($2,104,136), land contribution and an in-kind contribution.
