GOVERNMENT WELCOMES NEW POTASH MARKET DEVELOPER

Released on November 30, 2006

The provincial government sees the creation of a new institute to promote potash and fertilizer globally as an important step in the marketing of one of Saskatchewan's top commodities.

The International Plant Nutrition Institute (IPNI) was announced earlier this month, and will integrate the operations of the Potash & Phosphate Institute of Canada (PPIC) into its organization. This new organization, which is partially funded by the Saskatchewan potash industry, will also help the industry address environmental issues and co-ordinate research on the scientific benefits of fertilizer application in agriculture.

"Saskatchewan produces about 30 per cent of the global supply of potash, and the industry is an important part of our provincial economy," Industry and Resources Minister Eric Cline said. "Saskatchewan companies have been key to the establishment of IPNI, and I want to wish them all the best in advancing the importance of the fertilizer industry to agriculture within the global marketplace. The work of IPNI should result in even more Saskatchewan potash being used around the world, further strengthening our economy and making life better for families in our province today and building a future right here for our young people."

IPNI founding members include Agrium Inc., Potash Corp, Mosaic, Saskferco, Simplot, Groupe OCP, Arab Potash Company, Belarusian Potash Company, Bunge Fertilzantes S.A., CF Industries Holdings Inc., Intrepid Mining, LLC, KK+S KALI GmbH, Sinochem Hong Kong Ltd., Spur Ventures Inc., SQM, Terra Industries Inc. and Uralkali. The companies involved in the new organization are basic producers of nitrogen, phosphate, potash and sulphur for agricultural use.

Market development programs have been an important tool over the years to help grow the potash industry in Saskatchewan. It is expected that IPNI will build on the success of the PPIC to encourage further investment and employment in the province.
