NEW COMMEMORATIVE NAMING PROGRAM TO RECOGNIZE SASKATCHEWAN HEROES

Released on November 22, 2006

The Saskatchewan Geographic Names Board has approved a new commemorative naming program for the province of Saskatchewan. The program will supplement the existing Geographic Naming program that currently recognizes armed forces personnel and merchant sailors that lost their lives during the Second World War and the Korean War.

The new Commemorative Naming program will honour individuals who have lost their lives while on active duty in the Armed Forces, including peacekeeping and NATO missions, or while protecting the public (e.g. police officers, firefighters and EMS). It will also honour individuals who have made significant contributions to the province of Saskatchewan. Natural geographic features including: lakes, rivers, points and bays - predominantly in Saskatchewan's north - will be named in their honour.

Candidates for selection fall within three categories:

• Armed Forces, including Canadian Army, Air Force, Navy regular and reserve forces and Peacekeepers while on active duty on United Nations sanctioned missions;

• Police Officers and Emergency Response personnel, including but not restricted to: Federal, Provincial and Municipal Police Forces, Professional Firefighters Association and Emergency Medical Technicians while on active duty; and

• Saskatchewan People of Prominence, including Saskatchewan people who have made important contributions to the province.

"The Commemorative Naming program has allowed us to pay tribute to valiant men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice," Minister responsible for Information Services Corporation (ISC) Eric Cline said. "The new naming policy is a natural extension of the Geo-Memorial project, which will allow us to recognize in a permanent way the contributions and sacrifices of other Saskatchewan heroes."

"It's essential that we recognize Saskatchewan's heroes," ISC President and CEO Mark MacLeod said. "With the new Commemorative Naming program we now have a way to recognize the Armed Forces personnel that have given their lives since the Korean conflict. It also allows us to recognize law enforcement and emergency services personnel who have been killed in the line of duty and other Saskatchewan people that have made important contributions to the province."

Since its inception in 1947, the Geographic Names Board has named 3,913 northern lakes, peninsulas, bays, islands and rivers after fallen armed forces personnel from World War II and the Korean War. Where possible, families of the deceased are contacted and receive a commemorative scroll, as well as research about the geographic feature that has been named in honour of their relative. Information Services Corporation retains this documentation as part of the permanent place name files, which are accessible by any interested person or group.

Information Services Corporation of Saskatchewan is the provincial Crown corporation responsible for the administration of land titles, survey and personal property registries, as well as related geographic information and mapping systems.

Formed as a corporation in January 2000, but with a history that pre-dates the province itself, ISC provides valued customer-focused services through all business channels, including the Internet, telephone, fax and in-person at its eight regional customer service centres located throughout the province.
