The Province of Saskatchewan is investing $2.5 million to pave Cyr Road, in partnership with the RM of Canwood and the Big River First Nation, that will see improved access for area residents to the province's growing economy.Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation will pave 11.2 kilometres of the gravel road, beginning at the junction of Highway 55 and ending at the junction of the 793 grid road on the Big River First Nation.
In addition, the Province and the Big River First Nation have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to seek federal funding opportunities to pave the remaining 8.5 kilometres leading into the heart of the reserve up to the band office.
"The Cyr Road pilot project recognizes that in order for the Big River First Nation to participate more fully in the provincial economy, they need better road access to Highway 55," First Nations and Métis Relations Minister Maynard Sonntag said on behalf of Highways and Transportation Minister Eldon Lautermilch. "There are 2,100 people living in the growing community. By paving the Cyr Road, we are helping First Nation families take full advantage of jobs and services in the surrounding areas. We are paving a better future here for our young people."
"We are pleased with the provincial government's contribution to make the road more reliable," Big River First Nation Chief Bruce Morin said. "At times during the year, the roads are impassable and dangerous. Improving the road is something we have been working towards for many years. It will mean greater economic development and tourism opportunities as well as easier access for ambulance and health care services into our community."
The RM of Canwood will manage the road-building project on behalf of the provincial government. The design and engineering phase will begin immediately, with construction to start in the 2007 construction season. The project is expected to take one year to complete.
"This is an exciting opportunity to improve access to a large portion of the RM as well as the Big River First Nation," RM of Canwood reeve Richard Porter said. "Through the tendering process, we will work toward providing residents of the Big River First Nation with employment opportunities associated with this project."
This investment is a component of the long-term strategy to ensure the province's transportation network meets the current and future demands of a thriving and diverse economy. The plan will also emphasize building relationships between parties with the greatest interest in the transportation network.
