DISCOUNTED BUS PASS MAKES TRANSIT MORE AFFORDABLE IN SWIFT CURRENT

Released on November 16, 2006

Low-income residents in Swift Current will be able to purchase discounted bus passes starting December 1 thanks to a partnership between the Province and the City of Swift Current.

Approximately 1,000 low-income residents will be eligible to purchase monthly bus passes at a reduced cost of $15. Adult transit passes in Swift Current normally cost $52. The province is contributing a minimum of $12,000 to implement the program for one year.

"This program will make life better for low-income families in Swift Current through affordable transportation so they can go to work, look for jobs, take advantage of education and training opportunities and build a better future for themselves and their families," Community Resources Minister Buckley Belanger said. "This initiative is already underway in four other cities, and we are pleased that the City of Swift Current has decided to team up with us and make this valuable program available to its residents."

"Public transportation is very important to many local residents, particularly to those who live on relatively low levels of income," Swift Current Mayor Sandy Larson said. "I am pleased that bus passes can now be purchased at a lower rate, which should result in many individuals finding it more affordable to participate in the workforce as well as enjoy all our city has to offer."

The City of Swift Current will administer the discounted bus pass program to eligible residents, including people enrolled in the Social Assistance Program or receiving the Transitional Employment Allowance, the Saskatchewan Employment Supplement or the Provincial Training Allowance.

For more information about discounted bus passes, people can call Community Resources at 306-778-8219 or the City of Swift Current at 306-778-2740.
