STREET DESIGNATED \"MEMORIAL WAY\" TO HONOUR VETERANS

Released on November 9, 2006

At Saskatchewan's annual Service of Remembrance for the Public Service, held at the Legislature today, Premier Lorne Calvert honoured veterans, peacekeepers and war brides with the renaming of Saskatchewan Road to Memorial Way.

"We recognize the contributions veterans have made to our province, country and world," Calvert said. "I encourage everyone to take time to remember the legacy of all our veterans and those soldiers who are currently serving overseas."

Located on the Legislative grounds just west of the Legislature, Memorial Way will mark the road past the WWI Memorial, the Memorial for WWII, the Korean War and Peace Keeping Operations and the War Brides Memorial.

"I am pleased that together with Veterans Affairs Canada and Wascana Centre Authority, we are able to recognize the service of those honoured by these monuments," Calvert said. "Memorial Way is not only a lasting visual tribute to every veteran, but serves as a sober reminder to each generation of Saskatchewan people who follow in their footsteps."

The street renaming and the unveiling of the Memorial Way street sign, coincide with the province's designation of War Brides Month, which runs from November 1-30.

"War Brides have made substantial economic, social and cultural contributions to Saskatchewan and in recognition the province has proclaimed November as War Brides month," Provincial Secretary Glenn Hagel said. "Many women made their own sacrifices during war time and deserve to be honoured for their strength, caring and dedication."
