As a way of recognizing the valuable contributions of the close to 150,000 seniors in Saskatchewan, the provincial government is offering a Seniors' Gold Plan, available to all Saskatchewan residents 65 years of age and older. Minister responsible for Seniors Graham Addley today announced these benefits will include:• Free entry to provincial parks, effective today – This benefit allows seniors free access into provincial parks for the 2006-07 year, beginning May 18th.
• Free angling licences, effective early June – This benefit allows seniors to obtain a fishing licence for free. Although the licence is free, seniors are required to obtain one, and all angling regulations such as limits, seasons and equipment still apply. Once the free licences become available, those residents who have already bought a 2006-07 licence may obtain a refund by visiting any Saskatchewan Environment office.
• 30 per cent discount on fares from Saskatchewan Transportation Company (STC), effective June 1st. For people aged 65 of age and older, the total discount will be 30 per cent. STC will continue to offer a 10 per cent discount for customers between ages 60 and 65.
• Free photo ID from Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI), effective June 1st – This benefit allows seniors who no longer have, or never have had, a drivers licence to have the option of getting a photo ID, at no cost.
"The benefits offered in our Seniors' Gold Plan are a way of recognizing the significant contribution seniors make to Saskatchewan," Addley said. "We hope these benefits, as a gesture of our appreciation, will help seniors enjoy our gorgeous Saskatchewan summers and travel our province year round."

One of every seven people in Saskatchewan, 14.5 per cent of the population, is over age 65.
