NORTH SASKATCHEWAN RIVER BRIDGE IMPROVEMENTS

Released on March 28, 2006

Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation will be widening and rehabilitating the bridge on Highway 4, northbound over the North Saskatchewan River near North Battleford.

"This project will help improve the bridge by increasing its width and making it stronger. This is necessary as the age of the bridge has resulted in a deteriorating deck," Highways and Transportation Minister Eldon Lautermilch said.

This is the third phase of a four-year project and is estimated to cost $2.8 million. It will include removal and replacement of deteriorated concrete, removal of the existing concrete sidewalk, construction of the concrete deck to facilitate the widening of the roadway, replacement of the waterproofing system and asphalt surfacing. Work will commence on April 3rd and is scheduled to be completed by October 16th.

"The safe and efficient transportation of people, goods and services is of the utmost importance and drives economic development. Through this and other projects, we continue to ensure our provincial transportation network will meet the challenge of the 21st century," Lautermilch said.

During the period of April 3rd to October 16th, eastbound traffic:

• will be restricted to one lane;

• will experience frequent daily traffic delays and stoppages, as the open lane will be required to move equipment and materials; and

• over-width vehicles will be restricted to 3.3 metres wide.

Provisions are in the works to accommodate over-width loads including farm implement equipment. For more information call (306) 446-7778.

Construction will take place on the bridge from Monday to Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. or later when crews are pouring concrete.

Rehabilitation of the west half of the concrete bridge was completed in November 2005. However, cool temperatures delayed completion of the waterproofing system and surfacing which is now scheduled to take place in Phase 3. The cost of the second phase of the project was $1.6 million. The final phase, Phase 4 will be completed in 2007.

Motorists are reminded to slow to 40 km per hour through this construction zone and to watch carefully for workers and equipment.
