The provincial government has launched a new industry-driven process to develop strategies for the future of Saskatchewan's agriculture industry.The Farm Leaders Advisory Group (FLAG) is having its inaugural meeting in Regina today and tomorrow. FLAG will provide Agriculture and Food Minister Mark Wartman with advice, vision and leadership on a broad range of agricultural issues, programs and policies.
"I am excited about working with this group of respected, experienced industry representatives," Wartman said. "The farm leaders of this province have an instrumental role in the formation and development of agricultural policy, in discussing and proposing solutions to the issues, and in identifying opportunities to help transform agriculture in Saskatchewan."
FLAG consists of about 60 members representing a broad and diverse cross-section of the agriculture industry in the province, including leaders of various commodity organizations, general farm groups, business organizations and policy groups. To ensure a balanced committee, there are also 10 members at large on FLAG. Melanie Boldt of Pine View Farms near Saskatoon and PAMI President and CEO David Gullacher of Humboldt will act as Co-Chairs. A complete list of FLAG members is attached.
"I am looking forward to the development of a collective, clear plan for transforming agriculture in this province. We need a turnaround strategy that is focused on our competitive strengths in Saskatchewan, to ensure that agriculture remains viable and sustainable in the long term. I believe that this group can deliver on that very important objective," Wartman said.
