UNITED EMPIRE LOYALISTS DAY CELEBRATED

Released on June 16, 2006

The province of Saskatchewan is celebrating United Empire Loyalists Day on June 19th.

During the American Revolution, more than 70,000 American colonists, who were loyal to the British Empire, left their homes to resettle in eastern Canada. Many Loyalists later moved westward and were among the first settlers to arrive in Saskatchewan.

"The United Empire Loyalists brought a distinctive cultural identity with them when they began to settle in Canada more than 225 years ago," Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Glenn Hagel said. "Saskatchewan is richer for the heritage that Loyalists and their descendents have contributed to our ethnic mosaic."

The Regina Branch of United Empire Loyalist Association of Canada collected fieldstones from Loyalist pioneer homesteads to erect a commemorative cairn on Lakeshore Drive near the Legislative Landing. To share the experience with others, Branch President Logan Bjarnason compiled a book titled To Build a Cairn - a Lasting Reminder of the Loyalist Presence in our Province and Country.

To celebrate United Empire Loyalists Day a ceremony will be held at the commemorative cairn on June 19th at 2:00 p.m.
