A Grade 5 student from Yorkton is the Saskatchewan winner of the 2007 Energy and the Environment calendar contest. The contest, with a theme of "Be energy efficient at home, at school, and on the road," attracted 800 student participants from across the province.Brendon Walkington from St. Mary's School in Yorkton took first place with his illustration "Wind Turbines to the Rescue." His artwork will now be included in the 2007 Energy and the Environment Calendar that will also feature contest winners from all provinces and territories. St. Mary's School will receive a $300 donation for its resource centre in Brendon's name.
"Saskatchewan is at the forefront in developing and using alternative energy technology in order to be energy efficient," Industry and Resources Minister Eric Cline said. "The contest shows that students all across Canada are giving serious thought to the environment and recognize how everyone can do their part to be energy efficient."
Trent Schommer from Landis School in Landis was runner-up in the Saskatchewan contest. Trent, a Grade 5 student, sent in his illustration entitled "Use Biodiesel, not Gas."
The students received prize packages including sweatshirts, books, and laminated copies of their winning entries.
The 2007 National Energy and the Environment calendar contest is an initiative of Natural Resources Canada and is co-sponsored in the province by Saskatchewan Learning and Saskatchewan Industry and Resources. The annual contest, which has been running since 1991, uses winning artwork from students aged 6-13 to promote a theme of climate change action through wise energy use.
