The Canadian Survey on Giving, Volunteering and Participating released yesterday shows Saskatchewan is leading all other provinces and territories in volunteerism.The survey reflects a volunteerism rate of 54 per cent for citizens 15 years of age and older, well above the national rate of 45 per cent. The high rate of Saskatchewan's volunteerism contributed to 80.6 million hours of volunteer service in 2004, the equivalent of 41,979 full-time jobs.
"I am extending a very big and warm thank you to the volunteers who put the action behind another great statistic for Saskatchewan's voluntary sector," Legislative Secretary and Premier's Voluntary Sector Initiative Chair Doreen Hamilton said. "This survey shows Saskatchewan people are generous with their time and efforts in making Saskatchewan one of the best places to live, work and raise a family."
With the second highest per capita concentration of community-based organizations, highest rate of volunteerism, and highest participation rate in the country, it is clear that the voluntary sector represents a cornerstone of Saskatchewan communities. As such, the Government of Saskatchewan, through the Premier's Voluntary Sector Initiative, is committed to ongoing collaboration with the voluntary sector.
"While these statistics are encouraging, we still need to be vigilant in our work to ensure the continued success of volunteer organizations in Saskatchewan," PVSI Co-Chair and Director of Community Impact and Investments with the United Way of Regina Tracey Mann said. "By working together we can sustain Saskatchewan's voluntary sector into the future."
The Premier's Voluntary Sector Initiative works with government and voluntary sectors to engage in a collaborative approach to benefit Saskatchewan people and communities.
