OVER $135,000 IN COMMUNITY GRANTS APPROVED FOR SASKATOON

Eight Saskatoon community-based organizations have received a total of $135,366 through the Community Initiatives Fund. These grants are part of the 65 recently approved projects across the province that will receive a total of over $625,000.

Industry and Resources Minister Eric Cline presented the grants on behalf of Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Glenn Hagel during a brief ceremony today. Justice Minister Frank Quennell and Labour Minister David Forbes were also in attendance.

"The projects receiving Community Initiatives Fund grants reflect the identified community needs of Saskatoon and area," Cline said. "Every citizen of Saskatoon will in some way benefit from the delivery of the projects that are receiving grants today."

The funding will be used to support wellness initiatives, literacy programming, parenting projects and guidance for at-risk youth.

Groups receiving funds include:

• Central Urban Métis Federation Inc.- $23,750;

• International Women of Saskatoon - $30,000;

• Leif Erickson Place - $2,500;

• The Lung Association of Saskatchewan - $6,050;

• READ Saskatoon - $18,066;

• The Rotary Club of Saskatoon - $50,000;

• Sturby Place Tenant Association - $2,500; and

• Westview/Tradewinds Tenant Association - $2,500.

The Community Initiatives Fund was designed to be responsive to community-identified needs. Grant decisions are made at arm's length by a board of trustees based on advice from regional committees. Committees include representatives from agencies and community organizations involved in human service delivery.

The Community Initiatives Fund was established in 1996 to provide tangible benefits from Saskatchewan Gaming Corporation profits for Saskatchewan communities. Since its inception, more than $60 million has been distributed to community programs across Saskatchewan.
