The Saskatchewan Gaming Corporation (SGC), which operates Casinos Regina and Moose Jaw, continued to ensure a high level of sustainable profitability for Saskatchewan residents by posting a net income of $29.2 million over the 2005-2006 fiscal year."The Saskatchewan Gaming Corporation continues to play a vital role in the local and provincial economy," Saskatchewan Gaming Corporation president and CEO Marty Klyne said. "Despite the challenges this year brought us, we are extremely proud to celebrate our 10th year of success in this province."
The 2005-2006 net income is based on revenues of $94.6 million and expenses of $65.3 million.
Since 1996, over 16 million guest visits were recorded at Casino Regina – more than half the population of Canada. As well, Casino Moose Jaw celebrated a milestone this spring, welcoming its two millionth customer through the doors since opening in 2002.
The total economic impact of Casinos Regina and Moose Jaw on Saskatchewan's economy is equivalent to hosting six Grey Cup events every year for the past decade, bringing over $829 million to the provincial economy.
Since 1996, over $241 million of SGC's profits have been delivered to the provinces General Revenue Fund; 25 per cent is distributed to the Community Initiatives Fund and the Métis Development Fund; 25 per cent is allocated to the First Nations Trust Fund; and the remaining 50 per cent is distributed to important provincial programs for the overall benefit of Saskatchewan's communities, available for initiatives such as hospitals, education, roads and other community enhancements.
Other highlights of the past year include the opening of Casino Regina's Responsible Gaming Information Centre, the second of its kind in Canada, and being named the 2005 Business of the Year at the Tourism Saskatchewan Awards of Excellence.
"We are also proud to have one of the most inclusive workforces in the country," Klyne said. The total workforce for Casinos Regina and Moose Jaw is 901 employees; Aboriginal employees represent approximately 50 per cent of the total workforce.
