CELEBRATING PARKS WEEK IN SASKATCHEWAN

Released on July 4, 2006

Saskatchewan's Provincial Parks will be celebrating Saskatchewan Parks Week, July 9th to 15th, and Canada's Parks Day on July 15th.

Environment Minister John Nilson announced the week of July 9th to 15th has been designated as Saskatchewan Parks Week. Nilson encourages all residents to celebrate the unique natural and historic resources as well as the recreational opportunities offered by provincial, urban and regional parks.

"Saskatchewan is fortunate to be celebrating the 75th anniversary of our diverse parks system," Nilson said. "I encourage everyone to visit a provincial park this summer to enjoy the natural beauty our parks have to offer."

To recognize this milestone, 75th anniversary celebrations are taking place throughout the summer, with the majority occurring during Parks Week. Examples of celebrations include a variety of special events, a trivia contest, 10 Saskatchewan Express performances and a DVD highlighting the provincial parks system. As part of the Seniors' Gold Plan, Saskatchewan seniors can receive free entry into provincial parks and free angling licences.

Saskatchewan has celebrated Parks Week for over 24 years. Parks Week helps to create awareness of park programs, facilities and natural, cultural and historic resources. It enhances awareness of the establishment of park lands and the importance of preservation, conservation and sustainable management for present and future generations. It also promotes visitation to Saskatchewan's parks.

Nilson also joined other provincial and territorial ministers responsible for parks in designating July 15th as Canada's Parks Day. Canada's Parks Day is an annual event celebrating the importance of Canada's national, provincial and territorial parks. The major goal of the day is to focus public attention on conserving Canada's natural and cultural heritage, in which parks play a major role.

For further information on events throughout Parks Week, please visit the Parks web site at www.saskparks.net or call toll-free 1-800-205-7070.
