Sunrise Health Region today celebrated the $17.9 million Yorkton and District Nursing Home addition, which replaces several older facilities.
"The new addition is a major improvement in health care services, long-term residential space, and a workplace for employees," Health Minister John Nilson said before unveiling a plaque to commemorate the official opening of the new 93-bed residence and therapy centre. "This new facility helps us achieve the government's goal of improving the quality of health services and access to care, while ensuring the health system is sustainable into the future."
"It is an exciting time for staff, clients, and the citizens of our region as we learn daily about the services and possibilities this facility affords," Sunrise Health Region chairperson Ben Weber said. "We really expect to create something very special – a lasting legacy – with the opening of this facility."
Nilson along with Deputy Premier, Rural Development Minister and Yorkton MLA Clay Serby joined with residents, municipal officials and Weber to mark the official opening with a "ribbon joining" ceremony, symbolic of the new structure joining with the existing facility.
The addition, with bungalow-style residences, provides common living, dining and shared kitchen areas. Residents have private rooms and bathrooms adjoining the common areas. A day wellness program, outpatient physical and occupational therapy services and a kitchen serving Yorkton area health facilities are also included in the new building.
As part of the project, Anderson Lodge was closed as a long-term care centre, renovated, and reopened as a community health services centre.
