PROVINCE CONGRATULATES SASKATCHEWAN'S OLYMPIC ATHLETES

Released on February 27, 2006

The Government of Saskatchewan expressed its pride in all of Saskatchewan's athletes that competed at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games.

"On behalf of the province, I want to congratulate all Saskatchewan's competitors and coaches and tell you how very proud we are of you," Premier Lorne Calvert said. "It is an amazing accomplishment to compete at the Olympics and to achieve personal excellence at the highest level."

The 2006 Olympic Winter Games, which took place February 10th to 26th, ended Sunday with spectacular closing ceremonies in Turin, Italy. The Paralympic Winter Games are to follow from March 10th to 19th.

The Premier said all of Canada's athletes did an outstanding job in demonstrating their incredible talent. This was Canada's best-ever Olympic Winter Games with 24 medals, placing us in the top three behind Germany (29) and the United States (25). Canada also had 13 fourth-place finishes, with eight others coming in fifth.

"Saskatchewan's Olympic competitors and coaches gave exceptional performances," Calvert said. "To honour them, I will be inviting them to a special ceremony at the Legislative Building in Regina during the spring so that we can officially congratulate them in person."

Saskatchewan's athletes and coaches shared in the women's hockey gold, the men's long track speed skating pursuit silver, and the women's curling bronze medals. See the attached backgrounder for a complete listing of Saskatchewan participants, including medal winners. For further details go online to www.olympic.ca.

The next Olympic Winter Games take place in 2010 in Vancouver, the first in Canada since Calgary hosted the Winter Games in 1988.
