Legislation expanding workers' compensation protection for full-time, professional firefighters in Saskatchewan takes effect March 1st, 2006.Under The Workers' Compensation Amendment Act, 2005, ureter, colorectal, and testicular cancer, as well as lung cancer in non-smokers and heart injury occurring within 24 hours of an emergency response, are now presumed to be occupational diseases for Saskatchewan's full-time, professional firefighters, unless there is evidence to the contrary.
"We have the highest regard for the life-saving services provided daily by firefighters protecting our communities," Labour Minister David Forbes said.
"These amendments ensure that The Workers' Compensation Act adequately addresses the link between specific occupational diseases and the occupation of firefighting."
"I am elated that Saskatchewan firefighters are now covered for these additional cancers and heart injuries," Saskatchewan Professional Firefighters Association president Gerry Huget said. "This means that Saskatchewan's professional firefighters now have the most comprehensive coverage in Canada."
There are close to 700 full-time, professional firefighters in Saskatchewan. Since these illnesses are already covered by workers' compensation there will not be an incremental cost. The Workers' Compensation Board will continue to adjudicate these types of claims based on their individual merits and justice, and on most current medical knowledge.
