ABORIGINAL SENIORS' RENTAL HOUSING OPENS IN LLOYDMINSTER

A rental housing complex for Aboriginal seniors officially opened today in Lloydminster, thanks to federal and provincial funding totalling $300,000.

The project was undertaken by the Lloydminster Métis Housing Group Inc. and is supported through the Centenary Affordable Housing Program (CAHP), part of the HomeFirst strategy. Elders in the community helped to identify features included in the six-unit complex, such as the centrally located common room and energy efficient, in-floor heating.

"This project exemplifies what HomeFirst is all about, which is helping our seniors to remain independent by offering them the opportunity to live in safe, affordable housing," Community Resources Minister Buckley Belanger said. "We are pleased to work with the federal government and the community partners to make projects like this a reality to ensure that no one is left behind."

By creating the seniors' housing, the Lloydminster Métis Housing Group Inc. will be able to offer new homes to some of its long-time tenants whose families are grown, freeing up the larger units they are currently in for new families.

The breakdown of CAHP funding is $150,000 from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation and $150,000 from Saskatchewan Housing Corporation. The Lloydminster Métis Housing Group Inc. provided an equity contribution of $254,095. In addition, there was a $50,000 land contribution and an in-kind contribution of $15,000.
