PREMIER CALVERT AND MOSAIC CEO EXTEND INVITATION TO TOUR ESTERHAZY MINE

Released on February 13, 2006

The successful rescue of 72 miners from Mosaic Potash Mine in Esterhazy last month has attracted widespread attention and caused other jurisdictions to look to Saskatchewan for information on how to increase mining safety.

Saskatchewan Premier Lorne Calvert and Mosaic President and Chief Executive Officer Fritz Corrigan have responded to this interest by inviting J. Davitt McAteer, an expert in mine safety and former assistant secretary for the U.S. Department of Labor's Mine Safety and Health Administration, to tour the mine.

"Saskatchewan Labour has worked very closely with Saskatchewan's mining industry and its employees to ensure safety in what is certainly a very challenging workplace environment," Labour Minister David Forbes said.

Premier Calvert is meeting with Mr. Corrigan today at Mosaic's headquarters in Minneapolis, as part of a U.S. economic mission.

"That collaborative approach toward implementing the province's mining regulations, and Mosaic's recognition of its importance, proved to be extremely worthwhile in light of the fact that all of the 72 miners underground during the fire escaped the ordeal without injury," Forbes said.

"If any of the actions we took can help other mine companies and their workers in the future, we are pleased to have Mr. McAteer visit our mine and meet with our team to share best practices," Corrigan said. "We also will address what we could have done differently to prevent such a fire from occurring in the future. Clearly, it is just as important to address what we learned in this process."

Mr. McAteer was recently appointed by the governor of West Virginia to develop solutions to prevent further mine disasters in that state. The exact date of Mr. McAteer's visit will be determined in the near future.
