Investment Saskatchewan announced today that its partner in the Hypor joint venture, Nutreco, exercised its options to purchase all shares held by Investment Saskatchewan, making Hypor a wholly owned subsidiary of Euribrid, Nutreco's breeding division. This option has been in place since the formation of the venture in 2003.
Hypor is an international swine genetics company headquartered in Regina with its primary operations in Canada, Spain, Belgium and the Netherlands. The Hypor joint venture between Investment Saskatchewan and Nutreco was formed in 2003 when Genex Swine Group Inc., owned by Investment Saskatchewan, merged with Nutreco's swine genetics company to form a truly global swine genetics company. Investment Saskatchewan's original investment in Hypor totaled $11.5 million. The specific sales proceeds, which exceed the amount invested and generate a healthy return, will be disclosed publicly in Investment Saskatchewan's quarterly report once final calculations are confirmed.
"This investment allowed Hypor to grow to be the leading swine genetics company in Canada and resulted in Saskatchewan becoming a key player in the international hog breeding stock business," Minister responsible for Investment Saskatchewan Eric Cline said. "Taxpayers will see a positive return on their investment in addition to the jobs and research benefits that were created."
"We don't plan on any changes to the locations of our operating companies or headquarters as a result of this change in shareholding," Hypor President Dave Libertini said. "I think we can look back fondly to the role Investment Saskatchewan played in Hypor's development. They have been very supportive throughout the last three years, they had the foresight to merge the Genex operations with Hypor to form a truly global swine breeding company in 2003 and the wisdom to sell their shares at a time and to an owner which can allow us to grow further."
