A committee promoting job opportunities and quality of life in Saskatchewan at job fairs in Alberta says more people are looking at Saskatchewan as a place to live and work.
Members of Promoting Southwest Opportunities, a community-based organization focused on labour attraction and retention in the Swift Current region, met with more than 500 people at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology and Lethbridge Community College job fairs in November. In a survey about working in Saskatchewan, 78 per cent of respondents said they would consider looking for work in Saskatchewan upon graduation.
"Promoting Southwest Opportunities deserves to be commended for their work in promoting Saskatchewan as a great place to live and to work," Deputy Premier and Regional Economic and Co-operative Development Minister Clay Serby said. "Based on the survey, it is clear that people want to come back or move to Saskatchewan. As a province, we need to build on what this group has learned."
Committee members believe there is potential for Saskatchewan employers to target Alberta for recruitment.
"Traditionally, jobs were passed on through personal contacts or basic advertisements in the local paper," Southwest Regional Economic Development Authority (REDA) economic development officer and Promoting Southwest Opportunities committee member Keleah Herron said. "Today, the labour market has turned to give employees many opportunities, and employers have to raise the quality of opportunity to entice workers. To compete, we as a province must approach workers and showcase our opportunities and competitive advantages."
Promoting Southwest Opportunities is a sub-committee of Swift Current's Labour Attraction and Retention Group, which is chaired by the Swift Current Chamber of Commerce and Action Swift Current. The Southwest REDA committed $2,500 to the job fair project. Saskatchewan Regional Economic and Co-operative Development, and Saskatchewan Advanced Education and Employment also committed staff and monetary resources to the project.
