The chair of the Cabinet Committee on Public Sector Compensation Glenn Hagel today expressed disappointment that the union representing public service employees has indicated that contract talks have broken off."The employer's bargaining team is open, and remains open, to being at the table," Hagel said. "They have told the union that they are prepared to meet to continue discussions at any time, now and through the holiday season. Dates are also set into January, and they are committed to meet on those dates as well, if necessary."
Hagel pointed out that government departments have contingency plans in place in case of further job action by the Saskatchewan Government and General Employees' Union (SGEU). "Public safety is our first priority."
To help resolve the situation, the employer today formally proposed to the SGEU the involvement of a third-party to mediate the dispute. Hagel urged the union to return to the table to negotiate a settlement, "we are committed to finding a solution that works for the employer, for the union, and for the people of Saskatchewan."
