Yorkton's Gallagher Centre will receive funding from the $100 million Building Communities Program that has been designed to assist municipalities in addressing regional cultural and recreational infrastructure needs.
Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Glenn Hagel was in Yorkton today to announce that the Building Communities Program is providing $4.07 million to support the major upgrade and expansion of the Gallagher Centre.
The Building Communities Program supports the Provincial Government's commitment to making life better for Saskatchewan families and building a better future for young people.
"Cultural and recreational activities are key contributors to the quality of life that we celebrate in this province," Hagel said. "The City and residents of Yorkton have demonstrated, through community initiative and financial planning, that the Gallagher Centre is essential to the vibrancy of the region. The Building Communities Program is one more way we are ensuring that Saskatchewan families and communities benefit from our strong economy."
The Gallagher Centre has undergone significant upgrade and expansion. Renovations to the multiplex facility include the addition of a curling rink, an aquatic centre, an upgraded agri-plex, large multi-purpose space and library renovations.
"The Gallagher Centre has had such a positive impact on the community. From the attraction of the World Junior A Challenge, the Pharmachoice World Curling Tour and the Harvest Showdown, the building has proved it can comfortable handle large events running at the same time," Yorkton Mayor Chris Wyatt said. "This is fantastic news that the Province has come forward with funds that can help us pay down the debt and move on into the future."
The Building Communities Program will provide $100 million over three years – up to $20 million in the first year (2006-2007) and $40 million for each of years two (2007-2008) and three (2008-2009).
