Saskatchewan Communications Network (SCN) Minister Glenn Hagel and OmniGlobe Networks, Inc. (OGN) Chair Julian Costley today signed a Memorandum of Understanding to form a long-term strategic alliance. The two companies will work together to deliver a satellite-based wireless broadband Internet service capable of supporting video-conferencing, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and other e-solutions to rural and remote communities across Canada.
"Through its two-way digital satellite network, SCN has expertise providing vital high-speed Internet service to many schools, health institutions and government offices throughout rural, remote and northern Saskatchewan," Hagel said. "It's clear that the new multimedia age of broadband Internet communication is here and access is essential. Through this agreement, both business and residential customers in remote communities will have opportunities to participate."
Earlier this year, SCN and OGN undertook a six-month project together to deliver wireless broadband Internet service to several remote communities in northern Quebec. The success of the Quebec project demonstrated large-scale interest for a national service combining satellite with terrestrial wireless access, inspiring the two organizations to jointly extend the model across Canada.
Under the terms of the three-year agreement, SCN will provide and maintain the satellite technical platform, while OGN will develop, provide and manage the terrestrial wireless platform, as well as actively market and distribute the satellite-wireless service to communities, governments and customers in remote regions of Canada.
"Everyone in today's Internet-centric world needs affordable two-way broadband access for Internet, data, voice, and soon television, and yet there are still countless regions where such access is unavailable, unreliable or simply too expensive," Costley said. "SCN is a great partner for OmniGlobe: we are both innovative Canadian telecommunications organizations that understand the benefits of ubiquitous broadband Internet access via satellite and wireless. This provides a strong base for synergy and collaboration between our two companies."
With this new cost-effective broadband service over satellite and wireless, the first of its kind and scale in Canada, remote communities that are currently under-served, or where service providers are not competitive, will benefit greatly from access to high speed Internet.
A technical leader in Saskatchewan, SCN operates five digital satellite networks and market-related technical services. OGN is a privately held, global telecommunications company based in Montreal, Quebec, providing integrated end-to-end broadband Internet access network solutions at a competitive price point using an innovative combination of satellite and terrestrial wireless technologies. OGN focuses on world regions where conventional broadband infrastructure is unavailable, inefficient, or too expensive.
