MORE SPACE FOR WOMEN AT THE PINE GROVE PROVINCIAL CORRECTIONAL FACILITY

Released on August 24, 2006

Corrections and Public Safety Minister Kevin Yates today marked the opening of 22 additional bed spaces at Prince Albert's Pine Grove Provincial Correctional Centre for women.

The transformation of a unit previously used for young offenders on the same grounds alleviates a space problem that had the visiting room, and boardroom used as sleeping quarters for low security risk inmates of the centre.

"The new quarters will be living spaces for these low-risk inmates, who are preparing for release," Yates said. "These inmates will be part of a Pine Grove program to transition inmates back into the community through attendance at school and participation in other community activities. This supports our philosophy of rehabilitation to reduce reoffending."

Although the centre has the capacity for 86 offenders, it has been averaging more than 100 for the past several months.

Saskatchewan Corrections and Public Safety is responsible for keeping Saskatchewan individuals and communities safe. It achieves this aim by working with government and communities to enhance security and public safety through effective adult and youth corrections services, emergency planning, training, licensing and inspection services.

Note to News Editors: Media may film/photograph interior of Pine Grove Correctional Centre and new trailer units during the public tour. Common areas and areas not occupied by inmates can be filmed. No inmates can be interviewed or filmed without their prior consent.
