SaskPower today announced it has signed Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with NRGreen Power Limited Partnership for three new projects selected during the second phase of the Environmentally Preferred Power (EPP) program. Under the new PPAs, SaskPower will purchase approximately 15.3 megawatts of electricity from heat-recovery projects to be built at Alliance Pipeline Limited compressor stations located near Alameda, Estlin and Loreburn, Saskatchewan.
"Investment, innovation and jobs are the building blocks for a green and prosperous economy," Minister responsible for SaskPower John Nilson said. "The EPP program is a great example of how SaskPower is working with the private sector to meet the province's growing energy needs while reducing our impact on the environment."
"Innovation and new technology are what brought Alliance Pipeline Limited Partnership into service six years ago and they are critical to NRGreen's environmental power business model today," NRGreen Power President and CEO Murray Birch said. "We are once again pleased to be working with SaskPower on their Environmentally Preferred Power initiative. Generating electricity from waste heat simply makes good environmental sense."
In-service dates for the new projects are tentatively scheduled between early and mid-2008. Each site will require up to six months of construction employing approximately 30 tradespeople at each site and will contribute in excess of $2 million to the local economy - mostly through construction services contracts.
"The EPP program has already taught us a great deal about how to work with independent power producers to develop smaller-scale generation options that produce no new greenhouse gas emissions," SaskPower President and CEO Pat Youzwa said. "It is also significant in that it provides SaskPower with the generation capacity and time needed to evaluate options before making decisions on larger projects."
The EPP program, is part of the Green Power Portfolio Strategy. The strategy was designed to ensure that all of Saskatchewan's new electricity needs until 2010 are met from environmentally friendly sources, whose operations do not add to greenhouse gas emissions.

About NRGreen and the Alliance Pipeline System:
NRGreen Power Limited Partnership is owned 50 per cent each by Enbridge Income Fund (TSX:ENF.UN) and an affiliate of Fort Chicago Energy Partners L.P. (TSX:FCE.UN). With these three new projects, NRGreen will have a total of four heat-recovery power plants in the province at compressor station sites along the Alliance Pipeline corridor. The initial project, selected in the first phase of the EPP program, is currently under construction near Kerrobert and is expected to be in service later this fall. The Alliance Pipeline System consists of an approximate 3,000 km integrated high-pressure transmission pipeline system delivering rich natural gas from the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin to the Chicago market hub. The Canadian portion of the System is owned and operated by Alliance Pipeline Limited Partnership, owned 50 per cent each by affiliates of Enbridge Income Fund (TSX:ENF.UN) and an affiliate of Fort Chicago Energy Partners L.P. (TSX:FCE.UN), and consists of an approximate 1560 km mainline and an approximate 730 km lateral pipeline system in northeast BC and northwest Alberta.
