SASKATCHEWAN GAMING CORPORATION AWARDS DESERVING STUDENTS

Released on August 16, 2006

The Saskatchewan Gaming Corporation (SGC) rewarded the achievements of 15 Saskatchewan students with $12,500 in post-secondary scholarships.

Each year, SGC, which operates Casinos Regina and Moose Jaw, provides scholarships to encourage students to pursue full-time post-secondary education. Students demonstrating commitments to balancing education, family, work and being active in the community were rewarded for their excellence this year.

"As a community-minded corporation, SGC is delighted to have this scholarship program in place to encourage the students of our province to pursue post-secondary education," Minister Responsible for the Saskatchewan Gaming Corporation Glenn Hagel said. "The students being honoured are to be commended for their achievements, and we are thrilled to help them pursue their goals in their home province."

A new addition to the scholarship program this year is the $2,500 Community Leadership Award, which recognizes student leaders, undergraduate or graduate students in good academic standing. The winner of this award is someone who has made exceptional contributions to community; public service and leadership; initiating community development; affecting positive change; mentoring others; personal development and academic performance.

"We encourage excellence, and at the same time are strongly committed to cultural diversity," Hagel said. "At least three of the university scholarships and four of the college or institute scholarships are awarded to qualified students of Aboriginal ancestry."

SGC will again be awarding scholarships in 2007. Application forms are available at Casinos Regina and Moose Jaw, online at www.casinoregina.com or www.casinomoosejaw.com and at a number of colleges, institutes, regional colleges and universities throughout Saskatchewan.
