Canadian Peacekeepers are being honoured today through the provincial proclamation of Peacekeepers Day."Recent world events are a prudent reminder of the valuable role our Canadian Peacekeepers play in the world," Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Glenn Hagel said. "The proclamation of Peacekeepers Day acknowledges the contributions and supreme sacrifices that Canadian peacekeepers have made in the pursuit of global peace and security."
The Canadian Landmine Foundation, supported by the Canadian Association of Veterans in United Nations Peacekeeping and the Government of Saskatchewan, has proclaimed Peacekeepers Day to recognize Canadian Peacekeepers as well as the establishment and preservation of peace on missions abroad.
"The blue beret of Canadian Peacekeepers is a part of our national identity and is recognized by people around the globe," Canadian Association of Veterans in United Nations Peacekeeping Northern Saskatchewan Chapter President John McKay said. "Together with the Canadian Landmine Association, we are remembering fallen Peacekeepers and carrying on work in their spirit - to clear even more landmines from countries across the world."
Saskatchewan residents may wish to support the Canadian Landmine Foundation's fundraising campaign by donating proceeds from their yard sale to the Foundation. One hundred per cent of the proceeds donated will be used for landmine clearing projects and survivor assistance. Those making donations will receive a tax receipt.
