PREMIER CALVERT WELCOMES NEW LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR

Released on April 28, 2006

Premier Lorne Calvert today offered his congratulations to Gordon Barnhart on his appointment as Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan.

"Dr. Barnhart brings a strong sense of Saskatchewan, Canada and the Parliamentary system of government to his new position," Calvert said. "He is an acclaimed historian and has shared his experience in governance internationally. His distinguished career will be capped by a term as Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan."

Former University Secretary at the University of Saskatchewan, he has had a long career as Clerk of the Saskatchewan Assembly and Clerk of the Senate, and he has shared that experience in South Africa, the Republic of Guinea, Vietnam and Russia.

Dr. Barnhart has written several books on Saskatchewan and governance, including Saskatchewan's Premiers of the Twentieth Century and Peace, Progress and Prosperity: A Biography of the Hon. Walter Scott.

"I'd like to take this time to thank Her Honour Lynda Haverstock for her service to the province over the past six years," Calvert continued. "She has served the province admirably, most notably in the Centennial Year as she traveled from one end of the province to the other to attend centennial events in dozens of communities. A highlight of her term for me was the Lieutenant Governor's Gala in honour of the Queen's visit to Saskatchewan, which was seen from coast to coast to coast on national television."

A date for the installation of the new Lieutenant Governor will be determined by the Premier. Under the constitution, Lieutenant Governor's are appointed by the federal government for a minimum of five years, but there is no fixed term of office.
