COMMUNITY INITIATIVES FUND MORE RESPONSIVE TO COMMUNITY NEEDS

Released on April 28, 2006

Saskatchewan's Community Initiatives Fund (CIF) has been renewed with an increased emphasis on community based projects that enhance human development and community vitality.

Under the new plan, the CIF will provide funding for community projects with a focus on:

• Development opportunities for children, youth and families;

• Increased positive activities for youth at the local level including physical activity, arts and cultural activities;

• Increased community leadership capacity, particularly leadership opportunities for youth; and

• Inclusion of First Nations and Métis people as leaders in delivery of community activities.

"This year we are putting $5.5 million of casino profits toward community activities that help create a Saskatchewan where no one is left behind on the path to opportunity," Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Glenn Hagel said. "The Community Initiatives Fund encourages communities to develop projects that respond to specific local needs."

The modified focus of the fund was recommended by the CIF's Board of Trustees and accepted by the government after consultation with communities and organizations. All Saskatchewan municipalities and CIF delivery partners were invited to respond to a call for comment. Consultation meetings were also held with northern organizations assisted by the fund.

The Board's eight trustees independently approve grants for projects that are proposed by community groups.

"By examining the previous funding model, we have become aware that change needs to occur so that the fund is sustainable in meeting the needs of Saskatchewan people into the future," CIF Board of Trustees Chairperson Lance Brown said.

The CIF has proven an effective mechanism to distribute a portion of the Saskatchewan Gaming Corporation's profits to community-based initiatives. The corporation operates casinos in Regina and Moose Jaw. Since 1996, the CIF has distributed over $60 million to community-based organizations across the province.
