HEALTHWISE AWARDED CONTRACT FOR WEB-BASED HEALTH INFORMATION

Released on April 27, 2006

Saskatchewan Health will soon be providing medically approved health information on its web site. On March 30th, Saskatchewan Health signed an agreement with Healthwise to provide the Healthwise® Knowledgebase for this purpose.

"It is essential that patients and the general public have access to resources to help them become more engaged and active in their health," Health Minister Len Taylor said. "Providing in-depth web-based information is an effective way to help people prevent, recognize and treat common illnesses and injuries, and know when it's most appropriate to contact their health care provider."

Healthwise is a non-profit, Idaho-based organization whose mission is to help people make better health decisions. Healthwise specializes in medically approved online health information. On March 23rd, Saskatchewan Health posted an Advanced Contract Award Notice (ACAN) to determine if any other companies in Canada or elsewhere could provide the service as required by Saskatchewan. The posting closed on March 30th, with no other companies coming forward.

At this time, British Columbia is also using Healthwise as a source of web-based information for the public.

"Our nonprofit mission is to create up-to-date, easy-to-use medical information that helps people make good health care choices," Healthwise founder Donald W. Kemper said. "People in Saskatchewan can use Healthwise information for virtually any health question."

Three years ago, Saskatchewan Health launched HealthLine, a telephone health advice line staffed by Registered Nurses and available 24-hours a day, seven days per week. The service has been successful in increasing access to health information and advice for people across the province. The Healthwise Knowledgebase web-based health information will complement this service. It is expected to go live on the Saskatchewan Health web site in June.
