DEPUTY MINISTER APPOINTMENTS

Premier Lorne Calvert today announced changes to deputy minister appointments within the Saskatchewan public service. Effective June 1st, 2006, Doug Matthies will assume the role of Deputy Minister of Finance; Harvey Brooks will assume the position of Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food; and Lily Stonehouse will be appointed as the Deputy Minister of Government Relations. In addition, Louise Greenberg, currently the Deputy Minister of Regional Economic and Co-operative Development, will be appointed as Associate Deputy Minister of Health.

Doug Matthies has worked in both the private and public sector as a Chartered Accountant before he joined the provincial public service in 1988. He has served as the General Manager of the Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation and most recently as the Deputy Minister of Agriculture.

"I am very pleased that Mr. Matthies has accepted this challenging and important position with the provincial public service," Calvert said. "His proven leadership ability, strong financial management background, and experience as a senior public servant will serve him well in his new role."

Harvey Brooks has worked in the faculty of the Department of Rural Economy at the University of Alberta and held senior positions at both the Canadian Wheat Board and the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool before he joined the provincial public service in 2001. Since then he has served as the Deputy Minister of Government Relations, the Deputy Minister of Highways and Transportation and Deputy Minister of Rural Revitalization.

Prior to her position as Deputy Minister of Environment, Lily Stonehouse served as Associate Deputy Minister of Learning. She has also served as Assistant Deputy Minister, Post Secondary Education and Skills Training, as well as Dean of Extension and Development at SIAST (Kelsey Campus).

Before her appointment as Deputy Minister of Rural Development, Louise Greenberg served as an Assistant Deputy Minister at Agriculture and Food. In 2001 she was a Government of Saskatchewan Senior Fellow at the Saskatchewan Institute of Public Policy.

"Agriculture, Health and Government Relations are involved in some of the top priority files for the province," Calvert said. "The government and the people of Saskatchewan will benefit greatly from the experience, expertise and leadership of these senior public servants as they take on new roles and challenges."

Competitions will be held to fill the Deputy Minister positions at Environment and Regional Economic and Co-operative Development.
