Citizens of Kipling are improving their health with the creation of a community service co-operative fitness centre. Kip Fit Co-operative opened on March 22nd, 2006.
"Co-operatives operate in virtually every economic and social sector of the province," Deputy Premier and Regional Economic and Co-operative Development Minister Clay Serby said. "I would like to congratulate the citizens of Kipling for their commitment to their community and to their co-operative."
Kip Fit Co-operative will offer activities and programs for all ages, and help people in Kipling and surrounding communities pursue their fitness goals, have fun and socialize. Patrons will pay a one-time membership fee and monthly user fees.
"Communities interested in having a fitness facility need to provide the service for themselves if it is unlikely to be provided by a private enterprise," Kipling Mayor Pat Jackson said. "Our town council believes in promoting active living and a healthy lifestyle. Healthy people make for a healthy community."
Membership shares, fundraising efforts and donations from the business community helped cover start-up costs and equipment purchase. An interim board of directors found a suitable facility, equipment, and an insurance policy, sold membership shares and incorporated the facility.
Saskatchewan Regional Economic and Co-operative Development regional staff provided advice on co-operative development throughout the project.
The Department of Regional Economic and Co-operative Development provides support to groups seeking to organize or expand their co-operative organizations. Advisory services include incorporation procedures, board governance, member recruitment and development, and implementation of governance structure, as well as advice on idea assessment, feasibility studies and business plan development.
Co-operatives can be put to work in Saskatchewan communities to fill very specific needs. There are currently more than 1,000 co-operatives in the province, approximately 200 of which provide community service.
