INVESTING IN SASKATCHEWAN SCHOOLS

Released on April 20, 2006

Saskatchewan students and communities will benefit from major upgrades to schools throughout the province this year. The Government of Saskatchewan is investing approximately $7 million to improve the learning environment in 55 Kindergarten – Grade 12 schools around the province for the 2006-07 fiscal year. Including these projects, the total commitment by the government to K-12 capital projects this fiscal year is $22 million. Additional capital projects will be announced throughout the 2006-07 fiscal year.

"The future of our province will be defined by young people," Learning Minister Deb Higgins said. "We need to access every advantage our society and economy can provide to ensure that they achieve excellence in our education system. Investing in our schools will go a long way toward helping students reach their potential."

The projects announced today include improvements such as roof replacement and restoration, mechanical system upgrades, renovations, additions and portable classrooms, as well as preliminary planning funding. These projects will be cost-shared with school divisions across the province.

"These projects demonstrate our continued commitment to working with school divisions to improve the learning environment in Saskatchewan schools," Higgins said. "They will provide enhanced learning opportunities through high quality programs and services in modern well-equipped facilities."
