The Midwest Regional Economic Development Authority (REDA) and partners are working on a number of projects to create new growth and development in the Midwest region.
"REDAs harness the economic potential of our regions through partnership and engagement," Deputy Premier and Regional Economic and Co-operative Development Minister Clay Serby said. "I applaud the Midwest REDA for its role in bringing together key groups on projects that create thriving, diverse communities and enhance the quality of life for Saskatchewan people."
The projects include:
Unity and District Senior's Lodge
This 24-unit, assisted-living housing project was community initiated and partially funded through four years of fundraising. The project is a partnership between the Province of Saskatchewan and Unity Credit Union. Midwest REDA provided community promotion and assistance through the Centenary Affordable Housing Program. Construction on the $3.73 million project will be completed by fall 2006.
Delta Co-op Food Store
This $5-million, 27,500-square-foot facility in downtown Unity will create more than 15 new jobs. Midwest REDA provided community promotion on the project and liaison between the Delta Co-op and the Unity Town Council. The store is scheduled to open later this month.
North West Terminal North West Bio-Energy Ethanol Plant
This $34-million, 25-million-litre ethanol plant will require 2.5 million bushels of feedstock annually and create more than 200 construction, full-time and spin-off jobs. The Midwest REDA provided community promotion of the project, assistance with a pre-feasibility study and liaison between the North West Terminal and Town Council.
"These projects represent several years of significant work by community leaders and significant investment of community dollars," Midwest REDA director Carey Baker said. "They will mean continued job growth and economic prosperity for the town of Unity and the surrounding region."
REDAs are the Government of Saskatchewan's primary partner for economic development in the province and a key component of Saskatchewan's Economic Action Plan. The authorities receive cost-shared funding, training and mentorship support from the Department of Regional Economic and Co-operative Development.
